The name doesn’t leave much to the imagination—a fuel tank trailer is a trailer that’s designed as a holding tank for fluid fuels. They can carry gasoline, fuel oil, and propane, all of which are volatile and potentially dangerous. Although fuel tank trailers are safer to drive than that makes it sound, they still carry a number of potential risks in the transportation. Perhaps in part because of those potential dangers, though, fuel tank trailer drivers are in short supply and therefore have plenty of lucrative job opportunities.

 

To Drive Them

First, though, because of the risks involved, drivers will require a Hazmat endorsement on their license. You can earn this by going through a training program which usually involves passing a number of physical and written tests, a practical test, and a probationary period. 

You’ll also need to know some of the more specific challenges involved. First, they have a relatively high center of gravity, making tipovers more common and swaying more prevalent. Second, they can experience what’s called a liquid surge, where all the fluid in the tank sloshes first to one side, then the other, pushing the tank in those directions.
