If you’ve recently purchased your first car hauler trailer, you may have some reservations about securing and hauling a vehicle. Cars are pretty heavy machines, and can cause quite a bit of damage if not tied down correctly. To be sure both your vehicle and trailer survive your first towing trip with no damages, we advise reading through our helpful tie-down tips below.

Important Accessories

Before you get started you’ll want to make sure you have everything you need to safely secure and haul your vehicle. To keep your car in place, you’ll first need to buy a set of wheel chocks, hooks, and tie-down straps. We also advise purchasing a helpful set of tow chains and a pin lock for your trailer, to ensure it doesn’t disconnect from the hitch at any point during your drive. If your car hauler is enclosed rather than open it’s very likely to sway in the wind, and we suggest looking for a set of sway bars to help reduce the likelihood of an accident.

Tying Down Your Vehicle

The first thing you’ll want to do once your vehicle is loaded into your car hauler is grab your set of wheel chocks and place them behind each of the car’s tires. Afterward, grab your hooks and straps and begin attaching them to the various tie-down anchors located around your trailer. Once this is done, use your straps to secure the vehicle by wrapping them around the car’s chassis or axles. Using the adjuster on the strap, tighten the cords until they’re just taut. Be careful not to leave the straps too tight or too loose, as it could result in damage to the vehicle.
